Summary

Fall in love, break the curse.

It once seemed so easy to Prince Rhen, the heir to Emberfall. Cursed by a powerful enchantress to repeat the autumn of his eighteenth year over and over, he knew he could be saved if a girl fell for him. But that was before he learned that at the end of each autumn, he would turn into a vicious beast hell-bent on destruction. That was before he destroyed his castle, his family, and every last shred of hope.

Nothing has ever been easy for Harper Lacy. With her father long gone, her mother dying, and her brother barely holding their family together while constantly underestimating her because of her cerebral palsy, she learned to be tough enough to survive. But when she tries to save someone else on the streets of Washington, DC, she’s instead somehow sucked into Rhen’s cursed world.

Break the curse, save the kingdom.

A prince? A monster? A curse? Harper doesn’t know where she is or what to believe. But as she spends time with Rhen in this enchanted land, she begins to understand what’s at stake. And as Rhen realizes Harper is not just another girl to charm, his hope comes flooding back. But powerful forces are standing against Emberfall . . . and it will take more than a broken curse to save Harper, Rhen, and his people from utter ruin.

Goodreads

Plot / Storyline

Harper is an ordinary girl from DC, America but everything changes when she sees a man trying to abduct a girl. Suddenly she’s in another world and she meets a calculated prince who was cursed when he rejected by a powerful enchantress. Harper wants to go home but she is stuck in this cursed world and the only way to return is to wait until this season is over or to break the curse.

Writing Style

What I really like about Brigid’s writing style is that she switches the point of view between Rhen and Harper on a pleasant manner. It really adds something to the story. It is mostly Harper’s story if you ask me but Rhen’s POV gives you a lot of insight of why he is the person that we meet. Some might find it annoying that you keep switching POV’s but I don’t mind it with this book.

Characters

Harper

Harper is from DC. She’s an ordinary girl except for the fact that she has a disability called Cerebral Palsy but that doesn’t hold her back. She’s used to it that people underestimate her because of her CP. Harper is kind and thoughtful, yet forceful on her own way. She’s also very sassy.

Rhen

Rhen is the cursed prince. He’s used to immediate obedience and is good at strategy. He isn’t a monster when Harper meets him. He changes during the season of 3 months. He would command a girl to fall in love with him if he could.

Grey

Commander Grey is Rhen’s guard and the last surviving member of the royal guard. He can travel once a season to Harper’s world to take a girl with him. Harper nicknamed him Scary Grey because Grey can be really scary. Your opinion on him might change during the book.

Romance

Does this book have romance? Yes and no actually. It’s a retelling of Beauty and The Beast but it’s not like Harper immediately falls for the prince simply because he’s the prince. She actually doesn’t like him at all because he acts like a prince. It’s very interesting to see the development.

What I liked / hated the most

What I liked the most? HARPER! I love the girl! She’s sassy and badass. I want more main characters like her. She proves that women aren’t weak. I also love it that Brigid gave Harper a disability. She’s not the perfect or the ordinary girl. We need more main characters with disabilities. Disabilities are under represented. They don’t have to hold you back. You can do plenty of things with a disability. I truly hope that more authors will create main characters with disabilities. The world needs them.

Conclusion

I won’t lie to you. I’ve dreaded finishing this book because it’s SO amazing. I’m in love with this retelling. This book will be one of my favourite books ever. Fun fact: I got this book when I won a giveaway hosted by @thereadingchemist on instagram. I honestly can’t wait until A Heart So Fierce and Broken comes out in 2020. I’m not done with this story yet! I need more of our badass Harper! And I need more info on that plot twist at the end!!! Also, Brigid’s acknowledgements are so sweet. Please take the time to read that as well <3
